In British Columbia, there are five western pine species, three of which, Lodgepole pine (PinusContorta), Western white pine (Pinus monticola), and Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), are commercially important.

The wood is light in colour, ranging from cream to yellow to pale reddish brown. It is straight-grained, nonporous with a fine and uniform texture.

Uses

Pine is used for light and medium construction. Lodgepole pine is part of the spruce-pine-fir (SPF) species group that is used extensively in structural and building applications.

Ponderosa pine yields clear and factory grades of lumber for further manufacturing.

Products

Structural lumber, interior wall paneling, shelving, cutstock, millwork, window components, veneer, trusses, moulding, furniture, boxes, crates, coffins, boats, doors and trim, shiplap, pulp, pilings, mining-timbers, telephone poles, telegraph poles and railway ties.

Technical Specifications

These species are light in weight and of moderate to medium strength and hardness. The wood dries rapidly with small dimensional movement and little tendency to check. It is relatively easy to work, with good machining qualities. It turns, planes and shapes well and can be sanded to a smooth finish. The wood glues easily, has moderate nail and screw holding ability and takes a good finish.
